A Basic Income for Peace with Nature in Colombia

Basic Income for Peace with Nature is an innovative effort to transform the relationship between communities and their environment in Colombia.

Working with local partners, we will provide a universal, individual, and unconditional cash payment over two years to communities living within the Indigenous reservations of Solano, Caquetá.

Solano is a territory in the Amazon rainforest where conflict, poverty and environmental degradation are ever-present and intersecting issues. Through this project, communities will receive tangible recognition for their traditional role as guardians of the natural environment.

Unconditional payments will provide compensation for ecological losses and serve as a peace dividend, harnessing economic justice to foster community-led conservation and strengthening conditions for a lasting ecosocial transformation.

We want to deliver the world’s first unconditional cash transfer project exploring the intersection of conflict and conservation.

Solano, Caqueta

Solano, at the heart of the Amazon, holds invaluable natural wealth. It contains over 200,000 hectares of tropical forests, mitigating almost 150,000 tonnes of CO2e a year. Historically, Indigenous and campesino communities have protected these biodiverse ecosystems, yet they are excluded from the benefits of conservation financing and face rising pressure to engage in extractive or illicit economies. Traditional market-based instruments have failed to deliver either effective conservation or equitable social outcomes, and the region has lost 57,000 hectares of forest in recent years.

At COP16 in Cali, Equal Right formed a steering committee to develop and deliver this project, with over 20 members representing international experts, Colombian political leaders, national NGOs and grassroots civic society organisations.

OUR PARTNERS

We are working in partnership with NGOs Cool Earth and The Nature Conservancy to deliver this project.
