Cap and Share: unlocking $5 trillion for climate finance

Cap and Share: unlocking $5 trillion for climate finance

How can we end fossil fuel extraction, make polluters pay, and redistribute wealth - all at the same time? This panel, hosted by Equal Right and FEASTA, will introduce Cap and Share, a bold and practical system to cap global fossil fuel production, make polluters pay, and share the revenues directly with the people of the world. Designed to generate over $5 trillion annually for climate action, including a universal dividend capable of ending extreme poverty globally, Cap and Share is a game-changing approach to achieving climate justice and financing a just transition. Aimed at activists, policymakers, researchers, and citizens interested in climate finance and global justice, this session will explore how Cap and Share can complement existing global initiatives, such as the Fossil Fuel Non-Proliferation Treaty, and empower ordinary people in the fight against climate breakdown. It will also explore steps already being taken by climate-vulnerable countries like Malawi and Palau to explore how this ambitious system could be implemented using a phased approach, and the leadership role Ireland could play in making this happen.

A Global Commons Fund for Climate Justice in Palau and beyond

A Global Commons Fund for Climate Justice in Palau and beyond

When: 20 Nov 2024, 10:00 - 11:00, Room: SIDE EVENT 4.

Where: UNFCCC COP29, The Palau Pavilion, Blue Zone

What:  This side event aims to explore the Global Commons Climate Fund concept as an innovative financing mechanism for climate justice in Palau and other SIDS.

Palau is particularly vulnerable to sea-level rise and an increase in extreme weather events such as storm surges, given that the majority of its population, infrastructure and cultural sites are in coastal areas. About 25% of Palau citizens live below the poverty line, and vulnerability to natural disasters causes significant economic precarity, and impacts water and food security.

Through interactive presentations and discussions, participants will explore the benefits, challenges, and opportunities of establishing a Global Commons Fund for somewhere like Palau. We will also discuss potential governance structures, financing mechanisms, and implementation strategies to ensure the fund's effectiveness.

Moderated by: Kato Ewekia, founder of Saving Tuvalu, and featuring panelists from Equal Right and Cool Earth.

Cap and Share: How to raise trillions for climate finance

Cap and Share is a financing mechanism that facilitates a planned energy transition and supports redistribution initiatives such as Universal Basic Income. In Latin America, this income could benefit vulnerable communities, enabling them to continue their vital role in environmental protection and address the structural inequalities that are the root of socio-environmental conflicts in the region. In this way, Equal Right seeks to foster "Peace with Nature."

Tax for global justice

Tax is key for redistributing wealth within borders - but could it also move money beyond borders, to return wealth to the Global South?

And could radical taxation go further still, to tackle the contradictions within capitalism and achieve system change?
